August 2014: Jenkin Day 2014 Invitation

2014 Jenkin Meeting, 20 September 2014

Dear SOUE Member

You are warmly invited to attend this year’s SOUE Jenkin Meeting on Saturday 20 September, coinciding with the University’s Alumni Weekend.

Our speakers are two distinguished alumni of the Department of Engineering Science who, after experience elsewhere, have returned to occupy senior positions in the department.

The 2014 Jenkin Lecture will be presented by Professor Paul Newman, on the subject:

"The Oxford RobotCar"

Paul is BP Professor of Information Engineering and head of the Oxford Mobile Robotics Group. He will talk about the UK’s first self-driving car, the subject of current research in Oxford. He’ll explain the project’s motivation, its underlying technology, and its impact on the transport sector and beyond. The programme also provides you with an opportunity to visit the mobile robotics laboratory where this work is carried out.

Another talk will be given by Professor Lionel Tarassenko, who will speak on:

"The 2020 Vision for Engineering Science in Oxford"

Lionel is Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and takes over as Head of Department from 1 September. He will present his five-year vision for the department, as an international player in competition not only with Cambridge and Imperial College, but also with Caltech, MIT and Stanford.

The programme:

2.30pm     Prof. Lionel Tarassenko The 2020 vision for Engineering Science in Oxford

3.15pm Visit to the mobile robotics lab

Light refreshments

4.15pm The 2014 Jenkin Lecture by Prof. Paul Newman

The Oxford RobotCar

5.45pm SOUE Annual General Meeting, followed by a drinks reception

The venue: Thom Building of the Department of Engineering Science, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PJ.

We do hope you will be able to join us on this occasion. Guests are welcome too. The Jenkin meeting is free of charge to SOUE members. But to help with administration, if you have not done so already, please register in advance by one of the following two routes, by the closing date of 12 September. As we expect a strong demand for places, I recommend you to register as soon as possible.

  1. If you are an Oxford Engineering graduate, and you know your Oxford Alumni number, please register online via:
    www.alumniweekend.ox.ac.uk quoting the code AlumWknd14/EngS
  2. Otherwise, please just send e-mail to the secretary, giving:
    • your name, plus the name of any guests
    • your relationship to the Department of Engineering Science (present or former student (with college and matriculation year), present or former member of staff).

Car parking can be difficult in central Oxford. I am afraid there will be no parking spaces available at the Department of Engineering Science. I recommend using public transport, or one of the Oxford Park-and-Ride schemes, as alternatives to on-street parking.

Finally a reminder: SOUE information and news can always be found at www.soue.org.uk.

Hoping to see you on 20 September

Paul Buckley

Secretary of SOUE
