Membership of the SOUE
Full membership of the Society of Oxford University Engineers is available to those who have gained a degree that includes engineering (undergraduate or postgraduate) from the University of Oxford, as well as to current and former teaching and research staff of the Department of Engineering Science.
Students on engineering courses may join as associate members, becoming full life members upon gaining their degrees.
Following a change to the Society's constitution in 2013, all graduates of the Department of Engineering Science (including those with postgraduate degrees), and current or past Departmental teaching and research staff, are automatically members of the Society; students at the Department are automatically associate members, becoming life members on graduation. Membership subscriptions were suspended earlier in 2013.
These changes inevitably mean that the Society has stopped sending out postal mailings to its members; mailings will henceforth only be sent by e-mail.
The Society's constitution allows graduates of Oxford courses involving engineering that are not run by the Department (e.g. the MSc in Software Engineering), and students on those courses, to join the Society upon application. Graduates with non-engineering Oxford degrees who are now closely associated with engineering may also join the Society, at the committee's discretion.
As noted above, students and graduates of the Department and eligible staff are now automatically members and do not need to apply, although they may need to inform the Society of their contact details.
Members of the Society also have access to our LinkedIn professional networking group, which facilitates contact between members of the Society who wish to tap in to the wide range of skills and experience available within our membership.
