August 2002: Annual Meeting 2002 Invitation

Annual Meeting 2002

The meeting will be on Friday 4 October. The program of events is given below. Our Jenkin lecturer this year is Martyn Hurst, who after reading engineering at Merton between 1962 and 1965, spent several years in the Engineering Branch of the Royal Air Force. He then became Chief Engineer of British Caledonian Airways until they were taken over by British Airways. After spells with British Airways and Air Europe he changed to the manufacturing side, joining Messier-Dowty, who make landing gear for Airbuses and other aircraft. He is now their Managing Director. He has been heard in the past expressing forthright and refreshing views on management, and has by now accumulated wide experience of the aircraft industry. His title is:

"Engineering, Management and Aircraft"

We believe he will be well worth hearing.

The dinner will be in Mansfield, as in 2000, but regrettably they cannot match the unusually low price we had in Wolfson last year.

At the AGM there will be a proposal to relax the rule prescribing that the AGM shall always be held between 31 August and the start of Michaelmas Full Term, simply by inserting the word "normally". The reason is that the Committee would like, if it could, to involve undergraduates more closely with SOUE activities. It recognises that it would not be possible to organise a Dinner, in Michaelmas Term or out of it, of the type we have got used to, at a price that undergraduates would be willing to pay. Nevertheless it would like to have the freedom to experiment, whence the proposed rule change.

There are vacancies on the committee in both categories (those living in or near Oxford, and those further afield). The names of any willing to serve, and suggestions of anyone whom the Secretary might approach, should be sent to the Secretary as soon as convenient.
