Open Day 2012 (Tuesday 24 May 2012)

The day's programme of events ran as follows (also available in PDF format):

During the day undergraduate project work in the Department was on view. A competition was held for the best displays (across Engineering Science disciplines), with prizes totalling £3500 sponsored by ARM, GlaxoSmithKline, Laing O’Rourke, Sharp and Sony. The standard of work was again very high, with 40 entries of which 11 won prizes.

In the Thom Building Lecture Theatre 1, there were two mini-lectures during the afternoon: Dr Budimir Rosic spoke about recent trends in Computational Fluid Dynamics used in the design process of gas turbines for the modern power and propulsion generation systems and Dr Jessica Leitch, founder of Run3D, talked about the role of 3D motion analysis in treating and preventing running-related injuries.

The Lubbock Lecture at 4.45pm was given by Mr Howard Shiplee CBE, Executive Director, Laing O’Rourke. Mr Shiplee’s talk "LONDON 2012 - Engineering Success" was fascinating and inspiring.

The day ended with drinks in the Holder Common Room.

A biographical note about Mr Shiplee is available in PDF format.
