2014 Annual Meeting (Saturday 20 September 2014)
This year's meeting again coincided with the University's Alumni Weekend. The Jenkin Lecture was given by Professor Paul Newman, nominally on The Oxford RobotCar, but also covering the wider-reaching applications of robotics research to modern life. Paul heads the Mobile Robotics Group at Oxford; his talk highlighted the many different applications that their research lends itself to in addition to the obvious mobile robotics and robotic car scenarios.
The Jenkin Lecture was preceded by a lecture by new Head of Department Professor Lionel Tarassenko, entitled The 2020 Vision for Engineering Science in Oxford, giving his vision for the Department over the next five years and its place as an international player in competition not only with Cambridge and Imperial College, but also with Caltech, MIT and Stanford.
Between the lectures, there was an opportunity to visit the Mobile Robotics Lab, talk to the research team, and see the Oxford RobotCar and demonstrations of various robots and other devices.
The Jenkin Lecture was followed by the the Society's AGM, and the day ended with a drinks reception in the Holder Building.
Further details, including videos of both lectures and some pictures from the day, are available on the Department's web site.
