2013 Annual Meeting (Saturday 21 September 2013)
This year's meeting again coincided with the University's Alumni Weekend. The Jenkin Lecture was given by Dr Andy Brown, Director of Science at the Meteorological Office and an Oxford Physics graduate, on Weather and climate prediction: science and application across timescales, which provided a wonderful insight into the science behind weather and climate prediction and the ever-increasing accuracy of the models used, as well as many examples of somewhat unexpected applications of the techniques. It was preceded by two supporting lectures and the Society's AGM.
The morning talks were given by Dr Jin Chong Tan on Engineered porous materials: fundamentals to emergent applications, and Jac Cross (Trinity 1995-9), now with Arup, who talked about The European Extremely Large Telescope enclosure design.
The day started with coffee and pastries in the Thom Building, followed by the two talks:
- Dr Jin Chong Tan : Engineered porous materials: fundamentals to emergent applications
- Jac Cross : The European Extremely Large Telescope enclosure design
The Society's AGM (including the Head of Department's annual report) was then held, during which significant revisions to the Society's Constitution were discussed and agreed, followed by a buffet lunch in the Holder Building Common Room, before the Jenkin Lecture, which concluded the day's events:
- The 26th Jenkin Lecture
Dr Andy Brown : Weather and climate prediction: science and application across timescales
