Programme

From 11.00am-5.00pm undergraduate project work will be on view in Thom Building Lecture Room 3. A competition will be held for the best displays (in various categories), with prizes totalling at least £1500 offered by the Society of Oxford University Engineers and a number of industrial sponsors. The standard of work is expected to be very high, so the exhibition will be well worth a visit.

There will be opportunities during the afternoon to see the final stages of some one-week Coursework Modules undertaken by the second year students, e.g. on Mobile Robots and Mechanical CAD. You can also visit research groups in the Department: please feel free to approach individual academics to make arrangements. Details of our research activities can be found on the Department's web site www.eng.ox.ac.uk.

In the Thom Building Lecture Theatre 1, there will be three lectures during the afternoon. The first two talks describe work in progress in the Department: Dr Constantin Coussios will speak about some of the very exciting research that has been established in our Institute of Biomedical Engineering, opened in 2008, and Dr Ian Reid will present some of his work on imaging, in which the Department has a long-established reputation for excellent research. The Lubbock Lecture at 4.45pm will be given by Professor David MacKay, FRS, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Professor MacKay will talk on the topic of his hard-hitting and highly influential book "Sustainable Energy - without the hot air", a lecture that we expect will be both thought-provoking and entertaining.
